The article examines the potential of traditional edible insects consumed in Latin America as a sustainable food source, providing a comprehensive overview of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) associated with incorporating edible insects into Latin America's food diets.

Design/methodology/approach

This research focused on edible insects consumed in Latin America. A quantitative SWOT analysis was conducted by collecting data from 58 Scopus-indexed articles that examine edible insects in Latin America.

Findings

Insects are traditionally eaten in some regions of Latin America and are recently gaining popularity among tourists and foodies due to their nutritional and health benefits, sustainability and sensory profile. This text analyses the SWOT associated with the consumption of edible insects in Latin America. Strengths include traditional cultural acceptance, nutritional value, health benefits, sustainability and species diversity. Weaknesses include cultural barriers, high prices and inadequate regulation. Opportunities include climate change mitigation, market growth, export potential and culinary innovation. Threats encompass regulatory hurdles, food safety concerns and scaling challenges. So, insects can be part of the daily diet.

Originality/value

This SWOT analysis would help to improve the edible insect market in the region.
