Some years ago I went through the traumatic experience of changing mainframe computers because we had run out of power and the machine was obsolete. I found that languages such as Basic and Cobol were not machine independent.
I notice the difference of approach between Messrs Lee and Blunt, where Mr Lee uses the DEC dependent ADMIN development language and Mr Blunt, the machine independent RAPPORT package.
When eventually one has to change machines, is there any advantage in using machine independent software, or does one miss out on the manufacturers1 'goodies1 along the way?
