The monitoring of crest settlement has an important role in assessing long-term performance and safety of embankment dams. Over the last fifteen years field studies have been carried out at five old embankment dams in the Yorkshire Pennines. Published settlement data for these dams are updated and compared with published data for other old embankment dams. The effect of major reservoir drawdowns on the settlement behaviour of dams with central puddle clay cores and upstream blankets has been confirmed.
