The paper presents the findings of research carried out pertaining to the influence of the in situ stress field on the stability of mine tunnels. Physical modelling studies of various coal mine tunnel situations are described. Different tunnel shapes and subjected to particular ratios of horizontal to vertical components of in situ stress are discussed.
