Three case histories of underground hydroelectric project design are summarized, illustrating the necessity to carefully plan the extent of hydraulic fracturing stress measurements as part of pre-excavation cavern design. A suggested integrated field testing approach is outlined in which the results of rock characterization, topographic relief, and geological structure studies are used to rationally plan in situ stress measurements that cover the stress field behavior throughout a project boundaries.
