The use of the RMR and Q rock mass classification systems is developed for use in anisotropic rock masses, dominated by continuous bedding planes. Inputs are obtained from scanlines and boreholes oriented normal and parallel to bedding. Outputs include separate RMR and Q values based on these orientations. The appropriate values to use for different excavation surfaces and structures are discussed. A case example is presented from Tara Mine, Ireland, where the mass strength of a failed pillar in a strong limestone is well described by the anisotropic models developed
