The described research is designed to pragmatically assess current achievement levels for mechanized excavation systems with the aim of providing guidance for project success prognosis using reliability approaches to site characterization and equipment selection. Tunnel boring machine (TBM) case history data bases are used to develop recommended models for equipment selection and performance prediction. Models will be constructed on a subsystem basis so that new technology developments can be evaluated for performance improvement.
