This is an historic conference because not since 1900 have our two organizations met together. Then the British Institution was the host at its London headquarters to the annual meeting of the American Society of Civil Engineers. In 1968 it was my good fortune to be the recipient of similar host treatment in London when I represented the ASCE on the occasion of the ICE's 150th anniversary celebration.
I mention this birthday celebration in order to be able to quote a statement that Prince Philip made at the conclusion of that conference, which seems to epitomize the purpose of this Bermuda Conference: 'While it is very pleasant, perhaps, to be 150 years old, the success of such longevity depends not only on what you have done but on what you plan to-do.' We are going to talk of some of the things that we plan to do to make civil engineering's future as useful and significant as its past, in accordance with Prince Philip's admonishment.
