Many industrial processes generate large amounts of wastes. Typical examples include the fertiliser industry (phosphogypsum), steel producers (slag) and the power generating industry (fly ash). Although certain of these wastes are currently used to a limited extend (e.g. fly ash in cement), there is always a need to find more uses and new applications for them. This investigation will describe work done to determine the refractory properties of potential insulating materials. These properties indicate that this refractory material could potentially be used for low temperature insulating applications (1050°C) e.g. lining of preheaters in cement plants.
