STRUCTURE BEHAVIOUR WHEN SUBJECTED TO EARTHQUAKE

Professor H. Bolton Seed (Session Chairman; University of California, Berkeley). In reviewing the ten Papers included in this Session, I note that one of them deals with the design criteria for Alicura Dam in Argentina, two of them deal with design and analysis of earth dams, and seven with analysis techniques for concrete gravity and arch dams.

The Papers provide a comprehensive review of many aspects of earthquake-resistant design problems. However, in reading them one cannot help but note that our analytical abilities at the present time seem to be much further advanced

than our ability to develop representative models
