1959 - Enactment of Clean Air Ordinance to control dark smoke emissions from fossil fuel burning installations.

1962 - Shatin became the first smoke control area. (Shatin at that time was a rural village with a population of about 2,000 to 3,000, but with some, isolated, industrial development. In 1911 it had been the scene of Hong Kong's (and possibly China's) first powered, heavier than air, flight, when Belgian pioneer aviator, Mr Charles van den Born, gave a demonstration in a Farman aircraft. Now Shatin is the largest of Hong Kong's New Towns and home to almost a million people).
