INTRODUCTION

The initial shear modulus, G0, is widely considered to be a

fundamental soil stiffness property, and is a parameter for

practical geotechnical problems, both in earthquake engineering

and in the prediction of soil.structure interaction.

The shear modulus can be measured in triaxial testing with

the bender element technique. This paper presents a possibility

for evaluating the initial shear moduli G0( ij) of Boom

clay material at very small strains by measuring Gvh, Ghh

and Ghv on the same sample at any stress state with

independent control of the vertical and horizontal stresses.
