When the proposed British Design Rules for Bridge Aerodynamics had been drafted, we in the Department of Transport, and others who had worked with us, felt that it would be desirable to get a view on these Rules from practitioners and other researchers in this field. It was for this purpose that we asked the Institution to organize this Conference. At this juncture therefore, I would like to thank the Institution, the Conference Organizing Committee and its Chairman, Dr Wyatt.

I have listened to what has been said about the Rules, but before I speak on that I would like to comment on some, isolated points which came up during the Conference.
