Intelligent buildings (IBs), in order to be efficiently designed and operated, should encompass various technological, environmental, economic, and social dimensions. They should not only be designed with careful consideration at the building scale level but also at the urban scale. This is because they are part of larger networks within a city, and as a result, they can play a positive role in mitigating climate change challenges, such as rising temperatures. Given the complexity and interdisciplinary nature of IBs, researchers explore their essence and ways to optimize the systems embedded in them from different viewpoints and approaches. But what do we really mean by IBs? This chapter delves into some aspects related to IBs.
