Assembly of structural members and components with different size and material is required to build a building structure, so a well-developed understanding of the structural movement and tolerance compatible of the construction process and the potential for construction materials is a prerequisite skill for the structural engineer who designs the building structure. This chapter aims to provide an overview of movement and tolerances issues as well as the affect the work of the practicing structural engineer. This chapter is not intended to be as a comprehensive reference document but provides sufficient introduction and further references on the subject for those who may require it.
