Closing address

In 1982 the Institution of Civil Engineers promoted a conference at Southampton on Coastal Engineering. As its name implies this was largely orientated towards engineering. This was followed in 1989 by the Bournemouth conference which was entitled Coastal Management. The scope of the conference was broadened to include more planning and environmental issues.

Recognising the importance of co-ordinated management and the consideration of long-term issues in dealing with the coastline, on this occasion the scope of the conference has been widened even further. The question of interdisciplinary management has been concentrated on and the subject of coastal structures left to be covered by a separate conference.
