The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food grants licences for the deposit of capital dredged material at sea under powers contained in the Food and Environment Protection Act (1985) Part II. The nature and quantity of the material and the implications for fisheries and water quality are crucial factors in the assessment of proposals to deposit dredgings at sea. Greater efforts are now being taken to establish whether components of capital dredgings can be used beneficially for inter alia coast protection, infill or construction applications.
