This paper examines the background, research and execution of major improvements to the main entrance channel to Poole Harbour on the south coast of England. Of particular interest is the fact that the majority of the 1.17m million dredged from the channel over two successive winter periods was used for a major beach replenishment scheme at the neighbouring resort of Bournemouth. This served both as a coast protection and beach enhancement. The cost savings to both Poole Harbour Commissioners and Bournemouth Borough Council were significant and both dumping at sea and dredging aggregates from a sensitive area were avoided.
