Design of a high-rise building under abnormal loading conditions (such as “local” explosions and multiple fires) is a very important subject in structural design. This article contains three major parts: (i) code requirements regarding Progressive Collapse Prevention, (ii) design criteria for sustainability of a reinforced concrete building under abnormal loading conditions, including local stability of some elements and global stability of a compromised structure, (iii) design loads and combinations from possible explosions inside of the building with deflagration venting system. Explosion design loads are presented in the form of simple formulas. This article has an example to illustrate practical approximate approach.
