The background to the Eurocode programme and the recommendations by the EU on their implementation is given. The Eurocode programme, their format and development to EN are discussed. Details are given on the National format for the Eurocodes, and the contents of National Annexes. The opportunities provided by the harmonisation of codes and standards and EN 1990 for the concrete industries are discussed and observations and conclusions are given.
