Where the continuing safety of an embankment dam largely depends on visual surveillance, this may be usefully supplemented by the installation and monitoring of appropriate instrumentation. Requirements for successful instrumentation and the effective utilisation of instrumentation results in dam safety assessment are discussed. The limitations of instrumentation need to be appreciated to avoid unrealistic expectations of what can be achieved by the use of instrumentation in safety evaluation.
