The Dutch group CUR and the British organisation CIRIA have recently published a Manual on the Use of Rock in Coastal and Shoreline Engineering. Whilst primarily intended for engineers concerned with marine works, there is much of value to the dams engineer. This paper reviews the current state of the art in the design of rock or “rip-rap” protection presented comprehensively by the manual as it affects dams. It also highlights some of the unexpected and interesting features that came to light during preparation of the manual.
