Chapter 19 Transportation and vehicle movement

The terms transportation and vehicle movement relate to the movement of all vehicles and plant, and particularly transporting plant, materials and people to, from or between sites and around construction sites. The terms apply not only to the vehicles and plant directly employed by the people working on the site but also to the vehicles that deliver things to the site, such as from hire companies and waste disposal companies. They apply to the routes that everyone uses including the permanent road network and any temporary roads and haul routes to assist in these types of movement and the methods of controlling both works traffic and public traffic by the appropriate use of local site rules and temporary traffic management measures. In this chapter, we examine how to do these things without causing harm to anyone, by examining some of the main hazards involved in the various activities and some of the control measures that could be utilised to deal with these hazards. Each section finishes with a short summary of possible control measures that have already been identified. Additionally we will examine lifting operations and lifting equipment including the use of cranes and the various control measures which can be put in place to ensure the safety of the people involved in these operations.
