Over the past decade Taywood Engineering Limited has been carrying out a development programme on the use of explosives for the controlled removal of activated and/or contaminated parts of nuclear facilities undergoing decommissioning. Factors likely to affect the concrete removal have been investigated including concrete removal from re-entrant corners, curved surfaces and ducts, and from behind reinforcement and steel liners. Procedures for achieving a required level of material removal without impairing the remaining structure has been developed. The application of finite element methods to this class of problem with emphasis on numerical modelling of the concrete material has been investigated.
