The Wisconsin Avenue Viaduct in Milwaukee, Wisconsin is a 444 meter long eleven-span precast, prestressed concrete arch structure. The key element in the structural design is the curved trough-shaped, precast post-tensioned arch segments that functioned as both load carrying structural members and as self supporting permanent forms. The superstructure consists of standard AASHTO pretensioned concrete girders that frame into cast-in-place cross beams. Final comparative studies were carried out with conventional girder and possible arch viaduct solutions. This article discusses the design challenge posed in the preliminary phase, and the selected arch that was designed and constructed.
