This chapter gives an overview of current methods of highway capacity analysis applied in the UK. Although link capacity is discussed, the chapter is predominantly concerned with junction capacity. A brief discussion of the theory behind the most common junction types is presented together with details of the most common computer programs currently in use. This includes the derivation of traffic flows and identification of the most important factors affecting capacity for each junction type. The limitations of assessing junctions in isolation are considered, together with alternative methods for assessing networks, including the use of micro-simulation models.
