This second volume in the Delivering Sustainable Infrastructure series has investigated a wide variety of issues ranging from the simple to the highly complex. In many respects, the writing of the book and the absorption of the ideas by the reader are the easy bits. The real challenge is to take the thinking that has been described and implement it on everyday projects, in the face of scepticism and in spite of the ever-present commercial pressures that drive the construction industry in all corners of the globe.

We have no choice but to engage with the process of changing our direction away from rampant consumerism and towards a more moderate, responsible way of doing things. We have one world in which to live, and, if we continue to abuse it, that world will not come to an end, it will merely carry on regardless – without us.
