This Conference is being held to enable us to consider and discuss the most important and thorough FLOOD STUDIES REPORT. The studies have been carried out under the direction of and largely financed by NERC, the work being done at the Institute of Hydrology, the Meteorological Office and the Hydraulics Research Station, with the co-operation of the Irish Office of Public Works and Meteorological Service, the Soil Survey and other organizations.

In 1965 the Council of the Institution of Civil Engineers set up a committee to consider the revision of the INTERIM REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON FLOODS IN RELATION TO RESERVOIR PRACTICE, taking into account the information accumulated since it was first published in 1933. A re-issue of the 1933 report in 1960, supplemented by additional records, had been rather disappointing.
