The effect of fixed and soil-pile foundation interaction on the inelastic building response has been investigated. In this investigation, the structural model was a 12-storey frame building located in the Indonesian Earthquake Region-3 and designed according to the SK-SNI 1991 with full ductility concept. Two foundation models were considered i.e fixed and flexible foundation (incorporated soil-pile foundation interaction). The building model was excited by the 1940 El Centro North-South component, East-West component, the 1977 Bucharest North-South component and the 1995 Kobe North-South component. The effect of the soil-foundation interaction on the inelastic response of frame building in general is relatively small. The ground accelerations is not always a good parameter to describe the damage potential of an earthquake. There is a trend that the relationships between the drift ratio and the plastic hinge rotations or drift ratio with the element damage index are linear as well as the relationship between the beam's curvature and element damage index.
