The Cardiff Bay Barrage will impound the flow from the rivers Taff and Ely. During river floods the bay can become periodically tide locked leading to rises in bay level. The sluice structures designed by Sir Alexander Gibb & Partners Ltd will route such floods automatically such that flooding in Cardiff will not be adversely affected by construction of the barrage. Comprehensive back-water analyses were carried out by HR (Wallingford) Ltd.
