SYNOPSIS. Many major citie s in Developing Countries are experiencing rapid growths in size, population and demands for travel. Traffic management to assist the provision of adequate transport facilities is a relatively new application technique. The most effective use of road space by better engineering, regulations and policy requires technical assistance, technology transfer and local institution development. Two large cities at different stages of traffic management implementation provide an illustration of the need, means of approach and lessons learnt.
INTRODUCTION
The City of Cairo, the capital of Egypt, is the larges't city in Africa and the Middle East with a population of some 10.5 million, about 22% of Egypt's total population. With a current annual growth rate of 3*5% it is estimated that the population of Greater Cairo could reach 16 million by the year 2000.
