The way in which service-learning is developing internationally is striking. This essay considers three things: the development of both community service and service-learning internationally with special attention to reviewing developments in the United Kingdom; ways to research service-learning in comparative higher education and some of the key issues that should taken into account in conducting this research, including the challenge of analyzing distinction between community service and service-learning in an international context; and how service-learning in higher education, through study abroad and exchange programs, can contribute to the development of a global civil society.
