This paper deals with the use of cuts and Ms in order to improve the stability conditions of slopes near to failure. The obtained improvement is examined with reference to the ratio between the safety factor of the slope subject to load (cut or fill) and that of the same slope in the initial condition, in absence of load. In both the cases, the safety factors are related to the critical slip surfaces, found via a minimization procedure. Results of a set of stability analyses of slopes in different conditions show that cuts and fills are an efficacious stabilization measure only when the critical slip surfaces are deep.
