It is important to recognise that any residual contamination equates to an acceptable level of risk, generally following assessment against an appropriate set of criteria. This may be published limits (i.e. generic assessment criteria) or following use of quantitative risk assessment modelling. If the source concentrations exceed acceptable criteria and the levels of risk are deemed unacceptable, then remedial action to reduce source levels, break pathways or remove receptors will be required. It is essential that any approach be agreed in close consultation with the regulatory authorities, and other third parties (e.g. funders and insurers) as appropriate. Figure 6.1 presents the sequence of steps followed from identification of remediation objectives, through identification and assessment of potential remediation options, to selection and implementation of the preferred remediation strategy.
