First page of Bag to the Future – Meeting the Challenges of Coastal Erosion and Affordability

The challenge of this scheme was to solve the problem of erosion at this location on the east coast of the UK that was technically viable, practical and within the financial constraints of the overall project. This paper looks at the issues and challenges encountered during the life cycle of the project. The success and difficulties of this project were directly linked to the collaboration between the numerous interested parties. During the design and construction the team worked closely to develop the optimum solution using lessons learnt from similar schemes in the region.

The relationship between stakeholders for this project was instrumental to its implementation. The Coast Protection Authority, Environment Agency and local community recognised the issues and, in addition to Natural England, played an important role in guiding the project. The benefit of these relationships was in bringing out the opportunity for collaborative funding. The funding aspects of this project presented their own challenges which will be discussed further in the paper.
