While we all may be familiar with the expression “cats have nine lives,” my experience has taught me that as a principal of an elementary school, I too, must have many lives to keep generating responses needed to address the ever-changing environment within and beyond my School Building. Jean and I started out on this journey to create a school in a school building built in 1911. In 1913, the building opened as PS 61. It was named The Ana Howard Shaw School. Ana Howard Shaw was a leader of the suffrage movement in the United States. She was a physician and one of the first ordained female Methodist ministers in the United States. She was born on February 14, 1847 and died on July 2, 1919.
