This chapter introduces the book and action research which is a large and diverse family of applied research methods, ideologies, paradigms, and procedures. We trace the modern history of action research, beginning with Kurt Lewin in the 1940s, and look at the political and cultural trends that interacted with action research ideas from the forties to date.
