First page of Is Mathematics Ripe For Mastery Learning?

In a recent issue of The Physics Teacher, editor Cliff Swartz criticizes the mathematics curriculum revolution of the past decade under the title “The Great American New Math Swindle.” Science Digest recently reprinted an article for its readership entitled “The New Math Strikes Out.” The article, which originally appeared on page one of The Wall Street Journal, quotes a number of prominent mathematics educators critically analyzing the results of the new math revolution. And as I write this article the Regina Leader-Post gives editorial page prominence to an article entitled “Students Lack Skills.” Apparently, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa are contemplating remedial courses in mathematics and English for first year students.
