The International Board of Standards for Training, Performance, and Instruction (IBSTPI) first publishedInstructor Competencies: The Standards in 1988. At that time, IBSTPI limited an instructor’s role to the delivery of instruction. They were responsible for supporting learning in face-to-face settings by delivering content, making demonstrations, facilitating discussions, and administering assessments. Then in 2004, IBSTPI publishedInstructor Competencies: Standards for Face-to-Face, Online, and Blended Settings in recognition that instruction was no longer constrained by time and place. The 2004 IBSTPI competencies reflected developments in the strategies, tools, and settings available to instructors due to emerging technologies and an emphasis on learner-centered instruction.
