It is important in this discussion to examine the tensions that exist between Western scientific knowledge and indigenous or local knowledge; this is very significant for both ESD and the overarching focus of the volume, inclusive education.
First, it is important to note that the SDG Four Targets include Target 4.5 which aims:
Thus, there is a clear mandate for ensuring that all persons, including indigenous peoples, have access to inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning. However, there is the further notion that education itself should and could be made more inclusive by incorporating indigenous knowledge into learning.
