Rocks and rock masses are poorly characterized. Examples are given of variations and errors which are introduced in (a) measurement of discontinuity data, (b) in-situ stress measurements, (c) measurement of flow data, (d) tests for geomechanical data, which can potentially affect both interpretation and design.
