The Chairman (Dr de Freitas) explained that questions

referring to Prof. Chandler's Key Note Paper should be

included in this Discussion period and further suggested four

subjects for consideration:

1. What cannot be explained by lithology alone?

2. How is geological history converted in to engineering

parameters?

3. What role will geology have to play?

4. How should stiff clay be described?

My feeling is that lithology description is essential but I

think what we are missing is the detailed stratigraphy in a

lot of important clay formations. There are great thicknesses

of the material which in many cases have not been subdivided
