Generally concrete pavement construction involves the production of pavement quality concrete, placed on a prepared base using a paver and compacted with vibrators. However in Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC), road rollers are used for compaction. Therefore RCC could be considered as a new pavement construction material rather than a construction method. Most of the flexible pavement construction techniques could be applied in this construction. It is low cost construction method as mostly not much sophisticated equipment are used. This paper describes the details of some of the works carried out on RCCP in low cost pavement construction practices. Also included here the works carried out in some of the trial sections constructed to study the possibility of applying this method in solving problems encountered due to poor sub grade conditions and poor drainage conditions. During these works more emphasis was given to find suitable methods to achieve better quality in construction and utilization of locally available materials, better techniques for compaction and surface finishing. These works included the selection of suitable aggregate mix, water cement ratio and the cement content and the ways of maintaining the consistency of the mix under different environmental conditions. Further, several number of trials were carried out to look for a better method for the placement of stiff concrete starting from the mixing process up to compaction and the ways of achieving the maximum strength. Various types of road rollers were used in these sections and comparisons have been carried out on the performance each type of rollers.
