First page of Workshop Synthesis: Cognitive and Decision Processes Underlying Engagement in Stated Response Surveys

The workshop does not have any direct predecessor in any of the previous conferences in the series. It was deemed a useful topic for discussion because of an increased concern about the extent and nature of respondents' engagement with questionnaire tasks, particularly when the tasks involve stated response or stated preference (SP) questions. Several of the papers submitted in response to the original call dealt with this issue and it was thought appropriate to provide a forum for discussion of the reasons for this concern and to determine how it might best be addressed. The workshop benefited from three workshop papers and one associated poster which usefully set the scene.
