The structure and covering of the canopy and bridge provide an elegant, lightweight solution which affords protection from elements without significantly reducing daylight. footbridge across the river is a fundamental part the scheme. The Cork Historic Centre Action Plan identifies Cornmarket Street and Casde Street as hinge points at the heart of the study area and the point from which the Historic Centre can be integrated into the main commercial sector of the city. The plan goes on to say that the key aim of the development is to provide a viable open air market, which can function seven days a week.
