First page of Case Study: Educational Equity

Consider a high school that is both a flagship and legacy school for a large school district. It is a comprehensive high school, which we will refer to as Jackson High School, with an attached magnet program for the visual and performing arts. Magnet programs are specific public schools that have been redesigned in order to create specific foci for students: some examples could be a STEM focus, gifted and talented, or leadership. The additional history of magnet programs is that they were created in Black, urban schools in order to draw wealthy, white and Asian families. With the added allure of more programming and opportunities, formerly failing schools that were predominately full of Black and brown students were revitalized and remarketed.
