The High Level Bridge is a historic crossing of the River Tyne in Newcastle, UK, carrying both road and rail traffic. A principal inspection and structural assessment was carried out by Mott MacDonald in 1999. Since then major strengthening and refurbishment works have been designed and are currently being implemented. Works have included the complete removal of the original paint system and visual inspection of some 57,000m2 of metalwork and repair of all critical defects found; complete refurbishment of the lower road deck; strengthening of cast iron rail deck cross girders and a detailed programme of cast iron testing and research into its fatigue performance and durability.
