A soil investigation program has been executed with the aim of testing the suitability of alternative materials to be used as a cover liner for landfills. Laboratory tests have been performed on four samples of dried dredged material. As a result an “acceptable zone” based on hydraulic conductivity as a function of dry unit weight and water content has been established. Test results confirmed that the dredged materials investigated fulfil the suitability criteria for containment applications. In analogy with clayey soils commonly used for containment applications, dredged materials appear able to sustain low permeabilities.
