Abstract
Small tea growers (STGs) play a pivotal role in the tea industry and are the backbone of the Indian tea industry. The purpose of this investigation is to explore the potential of integrating tea and tourism activities into the livelihoods of STGs. A qualitative research approach is applied, utilizing in-depth interviews with the regulatory body members in selected tea-producing regions was considered. Data analysis is conducted using content analysis to identify key themes and patterns. Findings revealed that the STGs perceive tea tourism as an attractive avenue for income diversification and livelihood enhancement. However, several challenges are identified, including limited resources, lack of marketing knowledge, and inadequate infrastructure. Nevertheless, STGs recognize opportunities such as cultural exchange, educational experiences, and direct marketing of speciality teas to tourists. The study highlights the importance of providing support and capacity-building initiatives to effectively encourage STGs to integrate tea tourism into their livelihoods. Policymakers and industry stakeholders can use these findings to develop tailored strategies and programs to facilitate the inclusion of tea tourism in the STGs' livelihoods, thereby promoting sustainable development in tea-producing regions. This study contributes to the literature by providing insights into the potential of tea tourism as a livelihood strategy for STGs. The research sheds light on the challenges and opportunities faced by STGs in adopting tea tourism, offering practical implications for policymakers, industry practitioners, and community development organizations seeking to promote sustainable livelihoods in tea-producing regions.
