In the last decade the words 'conservation', 'ecology' and 'environment' have become widely used. Cover age by the press, radio and television of nature con servation and pollution issues, reports on the British countryside in 1970 conference, the European Conservation Year in 1970, and the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in 1972 have produced a remarkably wide base of informed opinion about man's impact on the environment. Fortun ately, definitions are no longer needed.

However, this interest is mainly concentrated on the rural environment. Perhaps this country of cities and towns needs the intellectual and organiza tional stimulus of a' City in 1980' movement to redress the balance, and to develop a better understanding of the effects of the urban environment on our lives.
